Westmeath vs Mayo
Westmeath faced off against Mayo last Saturday in Shandonagh, with the crowd in attendance treated to an exciting game which went to extra time. A strong crossfield wind saw both teams experience difficulties with shooting in the first half and the interval saw the sides tied at 0-6 apiece.
A Mayo goal after the break sparked the game into life with Westmeath responding instantly through an Aaron Connaire major. When Darragh Murray netted to put Westmeath six points up on the 50th minute mark, the game looked settled. However, with the home side down to 14 men, Mayo netted again and a late pair of 2-pointers saw the game finish level at 2-14 apiece.
Mayo added their third 2-pointer at the start of extra time but Westmeath took over to establish a 3-18 to 2-16 lead, with Darragh Deegan palming home the Lake County goal. Despite being a man short, the maroons defended resolutely in the second period of extra time and a Dean Kelly 2-pointer put real daylight between the sides, with the home team winning by nine points in the end.
