Fundraiser for defence forces veterans takes place today in Mullingar

Market Square in Mullingar is the heart of a special cause today, as members of Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann One, the primary charity supporting veterans of the Irish Defence Forces, gather for their annual bucket collection.

Locals may recognise the familiar uniforms and friendly faces around the town today, all of whom are themselves former servicemen. Mullingar has long-standing ties to the defence forces and the community continues to show strong support for those who served.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner earlier today, Eugene Stenson explained the purpose behind the fundraiser: “We are here collecting money to support the houses that we have in Dublin, Cork, Letterkenny and Athlone. They’re homes for ex-servicemen who fell on hard times. It ensures that they are not living on the streets and they have a roof over their heads and somewhere to call home.”

This annual collection is one of the charity's key initiatives, with another major effort held on Fuchsia Day, which features the charity’s emblem and aims to raise awareness nationwide.

Funds collected today will go directly towards supporting the housing and welfare services that help Irish veterans maintain the dignity they deserve.

The ONE team encourages all in Mullingar to stop by, donate and show their appreciation for those who once served throughout the day.
