“If your grandparent, or someone belonging to you, was in the same position as some of these people, you wouldn’t be too happy about it.” Of the 35 people who travelled with John and Tanzanian Heavenly Homes, many were first-time visitors, and one of those was Westmeath woman, Holly Garry.

Holly was amazed by what she witnessed in Tanzania, referring to the experience as “mind-blowing”.

Holly said: “If anyone gets the chance to go on a trip like this, they should do it, because it changes your perspective on things when you get home.

“When you get there and see how poor these kids are, it makes you realise how much some of us take for granted back home.

“Seeing some of the older people was hard, if your grandparent, was in the same position…”

Holly discussed how much she enjoyed her experience of travelling to Tanzania: “I struggle to put into words how mind-blowing the experience is, I’d go back in a heartbeat, as it’s so eye-opening.”

She concluded by reminiscing on some of the group’s journeys while in Tanzania, which included travelling on dirt roads on the back of tuk-tuks.

“I honestly would pick this sort of trip over any sun holiday, although the roads were something else, there would be times you’d nearly go flying off the tuk-tuk!”
