Regenerative farm walk set to take place in Ballymore next weekend

Westmeath grower and community food advocate Kate Egan is opening the gates to her 9-acre farm later this month for a special event showcasing regenerative and biological market gardening in action.

On Saturday, 23 August at 2pm, Kate will lead visitors on an insightful farm walk, offering practical tips on sustainable smallholding, soil health and working with nature to produce nutritious food.

Kate’s farm has evolved from a traditional market garden supplying local restaurants and shops into a thriving community hub. In 2024, she launched the Grow Together project, inviting local people to share the work of her half-acre garden plot.

Her approach blends regenerative farming practices with biological methods to replace chemical inputs, nurture long-term soil fertility, and build resilient food systems. The tour will also feature her mature forest garden, designed using permaculture principles, which focuses on perennial, low-labour crops.

Visitors will explore a rich variety of habitats, including an esker ridge, ancient hedgerows, woodlands with wild cherry and crab apple, and wildflower meadows alive with pollinators. Kate has planted hundreds of native trees and created a wildlife pond, which she says can be a transformative addition to any smallholding.

Spaces are limited and booking is essential via the link here.
