Westmeath named as one of Ireland's most EV ready counties

New study names Westmeath as Ireland’s third-most EV-ready county

Westmeath has been named one of the most EV-ready counties according to a new study.

The research, by Energia, looked at the number of public EV chargers per 100,000 people and the number of new electric vehicle registrations in 2024. The results were combined into an EV Readiness Score for each county.

Westmeath ranked third from top out of 26, with a an EV-readiness Score of 122.

Topping the list, with a score of 160 is Dublin, while Wicklow has 128. Fourth place on the table is Kildare (111), followed by Clare (104), Wexford (83), Kilkenny (81), Kerry (73), Carlow (72) and Laois (64).

The study also found regional variation: Roscommon, Leitrim, and Monaghan ranked in the bottom five, which Energia says highlights the need for greater infrastructure and awareness in some rural areas.

Andrew Dunne of Energia, said: “As part of our partnership with ZapMap, we’re helping EV drivers plan their journeys better and easily find a range of charging solutions on their planned routes. Along with our Smart Drive tariff and dealer network to get your EV journey started, Energia is helping provide the products and services we know EV drivers need most.”

Melanie Shufflebothan, co-founder and COO of Zapmap, added: “We’re delighted that the Zapmap app and map are now a part of Energia’s focus on making the EV driving experience as straightforward and accessible as possible.

Together, we’re enabling EV drivers to plan smarter journeys and access reliable public charging, accelerating the switch to low-emission mobility.”
