New principal welcomes MCC students to celebrate results

Leaving Certificate students from Mullingar Community College were invited by their teachers and principal to pick up physical copies of their results on Friday afternoon. New principal Emmett Kenny welcomed the students at the school entrance, along with former principal Seamus Mohan.

Students Frankie Lainchbury, Leah Darby and Angel Rowley spoke with the Westmeath Examiner after receiving their results. Frankie said: “I’m so happy with my results, I did so much better than I expected, to be honest. I’m hoping to go to college, but I’m not sure yet; I’ll see what happens. Most likely, I will head to Athlone because it’s so close, and I want to study nutrition.”

Leah said: “Yeah, I’m pleased with them. I’m planning on going to UCD for animal science, hopefully.”

Angel said: “I’m happy with my results, I am hoping to go on and study a medical degree somewhere, hopefully.”

Mr Kenny, who takes over as principal this term, praised this year’s Leaving Certificate students: “They were fantastic, just a really nice group. There are only 46 of them, but they are such a close-knit group; they worked hard and are brilliant people.

“All of them had their own goals to work towards, some looking at apprenticeships, some looking at PLC courses, and some going straight into the workforce.”

When asked about his hopes for the students’ futures, Emmett said: “Like all of us, I just hope that they find something that they love doing and get fulfilment from that.

“That’s something they can build on if they want to, that’s all that any of us can hope for from any profession.”

Round one of CAO offers comes on August 27 at 2pm.
