Temporary chevrons were erected but Cllr Alfie Devine says he “doesn’t think they will prevent accidents”.

Devine presses for action on dangerous bend

Three road traffic accidents in two years at the same location was what prompted Cllr Alfie Devine to press at the September meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad for remedial action.

Cllr Devine’s request related to the realignment of a dangerous bend on the Collinstown to Mullingar road L1731-29, and he informed officials that the most recent accident at the bend had happened just a few weeks previously.

“The wall at the house [there] has been demolished twice,” he added.

By way of response, the executive stated that a low cost safety measure application to the Department of Transport would be considered as part of the 2026 works programme.

“Something I think really needs to be done there,” Cllr Devine said, adding that there is now a regular bus using that road as well as a number of school buses.

“I know it’s on a river, and it’s probably an awkward job, but I think something really has to be done there sooner rather than later. If we could get it into 2026, it would be great.”

At the same meeting, Cllr Devine requested an update on the process of the land acquisition required to complete the footpath to Lough Lene, Collinstown. To that, the response was that the project has been submitted to the Department of Rural and Community Development for funding and an announcement is pending.

Cllr Devine also asked for an update and timeline on the traffic calming measures being installed in Multyfarnham village and was informed that a “table top” ramp with signage and road markings has been installed on the Mullingar Road.

“Further ramps may be installed at other approach roads later this year subject to funding,” the response from the Municipal District officials concluded.
