Midland Rape Crisis Centre offers free counselling
Athlone (Midland) Rape Crisis Centre – in operation for 32 years – has its main centre in Athlone, and has expanded to five outreach centres in Mullingar, Longford, Roscommon Town, Boyle, and Monksland.
The service has supported Mullingar clients for more than 10 years and continues to offer free counselling in the area. It offers counselling to men, women and adolescents from aged 12 up who have been affected by sexual violence, either recently or in the past.
It offers support to family and friends of those who have been affected, and support to clients who are in the process of reporting by helping with victim impact statements and the court process. Along with counselling, it provides consent workshops in secondary schools for TY classes.
Fortunately, the centre has short waiting lists and has the capacity to facilitate anyone who calls its 1800 number – people who do will receive appointments within a few weeks.
All the therapists are fully accredited and professionally trained in the field of sexual violence. The training and experience are vital to clients who are in crisis and need the expertise of trained counsellors while they are going through such difficult periods in their lives.
The service operates in conjunction with Cuan, a statutory agency under the remit of the Department of Justice. It was set up by the government to tackle and reduce domestic, sexual and gender-based violence (DSGBV).
