Concert to mark anniversary of Count John McCormack

The life of famous Athlone native and lyric tenor Count John McCormack will be celebrated in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel this Saturday.

Taking place on September 27 from 7pm, ‘An Evening With Count McCormack’ marks 80 years since the passing of the world-renowned singer.

Count McCormack passed away on September 16, 1945 and will always be remembered thanks to his impressive record collection that used early Edison wax cylinders to record his voice.

David Count McCormack, the great grandson of John Count McCormack, shared his delighted to see the 80th anniversary being marked with a concert in Count McCormack’s home town, and will give opening remarks on the day.

The mayor, Cllr Vinny McCormack, will welcome the current Count McCormack to the McCormack Room in the Shamrock Lodge.

Count McCormack is remembered in Athlone through various place names, statues and plaques but for one special evening, McCormack’s Songbook will be sung by acclaimed tenor Ross Scanlon, who has performed McCormack’s Songbook across Europe, accompanied on the night by Mary Scarlett on piano.
