Shane has guided the teams from D league basketball to the A league in four years. Two weeks ago the team won their first ever A Basketball Cup match, vs St Mel’s, Longford. The St Finian’s gymnasium was full to the brim on Wednesday September 24, as the school held the annual awards ceremony.
The evening consisted of live music performances, speeches from the principal and past pupils, and, of course, awards for multiple students in different categories. Members of staff highlighted school improvements over the years, especially the ongoing upgrades to the facilities. TY students were congratulated for their AIMS award winning staging of ‘West Side Story’.
Speaking at the event, principal John McHale said: “Today we aim to recognise the achievements of our students across a wide range of endeavours.
“There is so much to celebrate when it comes to our school, and you will get a flavour of most of it tonight.
“Simply, I want to thank all staff, students, and parents for their goodwill and cooperation during the school year. I am so grateful.”
Former student John Keane, guest speaker, highlighted the importance of resilience in the years after leaving school. “Having spent five years in this school, it truly is a privilege to now stand here.
“The last time I was in this hall, I was 17 years old, sitting my Leaving Cert, and to be honest, I never thought I would pass.
“Although I always had a spark in me, a belief that I would succeed if you will, and that spark is my message to you tonight.”
“If you see even the smallest part of yourself, follow through with it, and that’s how I got to this point in my life.”
