Road markings for exit from new ‘Ard na Gréine’ estate
There were positive responses from council officials to requests by councillors at the September meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad. Cllr Mick Dollard asked if there were proposals for traffic calming or signs at the exit to the Bellview Road from the new ‘Ard na Gréine’ estate beside the Bridge Centre and was told a stop sign will be erected and road markings provided.
He also asked when it is envisaged that the proposed Active Travel Scheme for Harbour Street would commence and was told it is in development at present, and anticipated that it will be ready for the planning process in early 2026.
He asked that the district contact Waterways Ireland with a view to having the large weeds on the Royal Canal removed and was told that can be done. The district also undertook, at Cllr Dollard’s request, to examine what measures are required to reduce surface water entering the garden of a house at Ginnell Terrace.
Cllr Aoife Davitt asked that the district fill potholes in Macetown, and was told the work would be done “in the next two weeks”. That was also the timeframe given to examine a storm drain at Ballynagall, as requested by Cllr Davitt. The work is to be undertaken as part of the normal road maintenance programme.
Also on foot of a request from Cllr Davitt, councillors were told that double yellow lines are to be installed in Deravarra estate, Mullingar, to address concerns about cars parking on footpaths. The works will be carried out by the district’s road lining contractor following agreement with residents.
Cllr Davitt was also informed that additional ‘Slow’ markings will be painted on the road at Kilpatrick Bridge as part of agreed road safety measures, in the coming weeks.
For Cllr Niall Gaffney, who asked that drainage works be carried out outside Turin Church, the response was that the district will examine the location as part of the normal road maintenance programme.
He also asked for an update on traffic calming at Edmonton NS and was told the district has installed additional road markings there and will consider further road safety measures as part of the 2026 estimates.
A further request by Cllr Gaffney was for an update on repairs to public lighting at Raharney. “The Transportation Section has advised that the light in question is now repaired,” the written response to read.
Cllr Bill Collentine asked that the district resurface the Ennell Court Road. The district responded with an undertaking that resurfacing will be done. He also asked that the district extend the path from the new housing development on the C link road to Ashefield and was told that works would commence in the following three weeks.
Cllr Emily Wallace asked if countdown timers could be installed on traffic lights to help drivers and pedestrians make safer decisions and reduce risky behaviour. The council confirmed that timers will be included on all new traffic lights. “Funding for adding timers to existing signals may be considered as part of the 2026 estimates,” the written reply stated.
Cllr Alfie Devine sought ramps on the road into Finea. The reply stated that the district will consider traffic calming measures at that location as part of the 2026 works estimates.
Cllr Wallace asked that the district resurface the L59291 in Dunamon, Streete; the response said maintenance works will be carried out. She told officials the road has deteriorated significantly over recent months and is a safety concern for all road users.
