Woman accused of attack on female victim in Mullingar street row

A Westmeath woman has been charged with violently assaulting another woman in the middle of Mullingar during the early hours of the morning.

Rebecca Carney (27) with an address at Newpark Court, Kinnegad, Westmeath, appeared at Mullingar District Court accused of assault at Oliver Plunkett Street on September 29 last year.

The court heard that gardaí came on the incident following a call claiming a fight had started minutes earlier.

Sgt Orla Keenan said that on the arrival of gardaí, a woman was observed with noticeable injuries to her face.

She said one of those was a “large lump” on the woman’s forehead.

In a jurisdiction hearing to decide the appropriate court for the case to be heard, Judge Emile Daly was informed the woman was later transferred to the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar for treatment.

There, the woman underwent treatment for a hematoma and for abrasions to her eye and nose.

Sgt Keenan said a CT scan proved unremarkable, and the woman was discharged from hospital.

A statement taken from the woman, which Sgt Keenan said will form part of the state case, will allege how she had sustained a punch to the face.

No plea or suggestion of one was entered by Ms Carney as she stood motionless beside her defence solicitor David Nohilly.

Judge Daly deemed the case suitable for the District Court and accepted jurisdiction.

Mr Nohilly made a disclosure application for all state evidence applicable to the case to be released to his offices in order to consider his client’s position.

Judge Daly granted that request and remanded Ms Carney on bail to Mullingar District Court on November 27.
