Man arrested following incident on Austin Friars Street

Austin Friars Street in Mullingar was partially closed yesterday afternoon, following reports of an incident involving a male in his 30s.

​Following a swift Garda response, with the assistance of the National Negotiators Unit and in accordance with Operational Command Protocol, the incident was dealt with peacefully.

​The Westmeath Examiner contacted the Garda Press Office, to which we received this response:

​“Gardaí responded to a report of an incident on Austin Friar Street in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath at approximately 12:45pm on Tuesday, 21st October 2025.

“On arrival of Gardaí, a male had barricaded himself into a property.

“An Garda Síochána initiated its Operational Command protocol, appointing an On-Scene Commander, and local Garda negotiators from the National Negotiators Unit attended the scene.

“The incident was peacefully resolved a short time later following negotiations. No injuries were reported.

“The male, aged in his 30s, was arrested at the scene and detained under the Mental Health Act.

“He has since been charged in connection with this incident and was due to appear before Athlone District Court this morning, Wednesday 22nd October 2025.”

An Garda Síochána also added that the matter is now before the courts, and they are not in a position to comment any further at this time.
