New book chronicles the legacy of Longford’s 4th Cavalry Squadron
‘The Warriors’ captures decades of service and pride in Longford’s military history
Longford County Library, Archives, Arts and Heritage Services will host the launch of ‘The Warriors’: A History of the 4th Motor Squadron/Cavalry Squadron’ by Hugh Farrell on Friday, 21 November at 7.30pm in Longford Library. The event will be officiated by Noel Byrne, retired Lieutenant-Colonel and former Officer Commanding at Seán Connolly Barracks.
The book charts the remarkable journey of the squadron, from its founding in 1940 at Custume Barracks, Athlone, through its decades in Connolly Barracks, Longford (1972–2009), to its formal disbandment in 2012. Richly illustrated, it offers a vivid record for those who served, their families, and anyone interested in Longford’s proud military heritage.
Author Hugh Farrell, a former member of the unit and one of Longford’s most respected local historians, brings unique insight to this work. Hugh previously authored a celebrated history of the 17th Infantry Battalion and currently chairs the Peter Keenan Branch of the ONE. Hugh was a previous Chairperson of the County Longford Historical Society.
