Council to take in charge several estates in Mullingar-Kinnegad

Residents in a number of estates in the Mullingar-Kinnegad Municipal District will be glad to know that the County Council is set to take in charge their areas.

Details of the areas benefiting from the move were outlined to members of the Mullingar-Kinnegad Municipal District at their November monthly meeting held in Mullingar last week.

The largest area set to benefit is Farranshock Park in Mullingar which consists of 213 units.

Also being taken in charge are the area surrounding 31 units at the Cedars in Lakepoint Park, six units at Castletown Green in Delvin, eight units at the Gables and the Downs in Lakepoint Park.

The next steps involve advertising the taking in charge through the local media and the upload onto the council's consultation portal of the taking in charge documentation which stays live for a minimum of four weeks. Over that time, and for two further weeks, submissions are invited from the public on the taking in charge and all submissions received during that timeline will be assessed and given due consideration in a report being prepared by the Chief Executive.

That report then goes to the elected members for their endorsement at the Mullingar-Kinnegad Municipal District meeting in January of 2026.

Documentation provided to the members in through a presentation at the meeting revealed that the taking in charge process means the council will take responsibility for the roads, footpaths, public lights, the surface water sewer network and the green spaces within the boundaries of the areas being taken in charge. When the estate is taken in charge Uisce Éireann, formerly Irish Water, is responsible for the mains water and the wastewater sewer network.

The council does not cut the grass in the green areas or prune trees or hedges or pick litter in housing estates. This becomes the responsibility of the residents.
