Uisce Éireann complete works on two Westmeath projects
Over four kilometres of aged water mains have been replaced with new modern pipes improving water supplies in Bunbrosa, Monilea, Ballynagall and Knockdrin, outside Mullingar.
Local residents can look forward to a more secure and reliable water supply as Uisce Éireann completes upgrade works on two critical water main replacement projects.
The investment will lower the instances of bursts and supply disruptions, providing a more reliable water supply for local homes and businesses for years to come.
These are important projects for the communities involved: “We are delighted to have completed these works that are now benefiting local homes and businesses, across Bunbrosa, Monilea, Ballynagall and Knockdrin,” Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said.
Mr Murphy explained that the upgrade is vital in maintaining the water infrastructure: “By replacing old water mains, we ensure a more sustainable water supply, eliminate existing leaks, and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground protecting our most precious resource.
“In addition to the local communities reaping the rewards of this new water infrastructure, these upgrades are an important step in the ongoing efforts to safeguard the water supply for the wider Mullingar area. I would like to thank the public and road users for their patience and support while these works were being completed.”
A variety of measures have been taken to protect Lough Owel, which is the source for the Mullingar Regional supply, including water main replacement, active leak detection and repairs across the network alongside ongoing conservation efforts by the local community.
Efforts to reduce water lost through leakage are ongoing. This includes installing control valves at key locations in the network to help prevent bursts and improve overall management, enabling reservoirs to recover during periods of low demand.
Enhancements in data quality will soon be realised thanks to the advanced metering program, which is now underway. Shareridge carried out recent works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Both projects were delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which continues to deliver significant benefits to communities across Ireland, including improved water quality, provision of a more resilient and sustainable water supply for customers, and considerable water savings.
Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
