Midlands author to launch book on transformation of peatlands
Author Diarmuid Mollin from Rahan will launch his new book 'Transition' on Wednesday December 3 at 6.30pm in Midland Books, High Street, Tullamore.
Ireland’s peatlands have long been a defining feature of the country’s landscape and identity - vast, open expanses that have shaped communities, powered homes, and inspired generations. But in recent years, these peatlands have entered a new chapter.
Transition, a striking new photographic book, captures this story through objects in time - each one a tangible link to the past, a marker of the present, or a symbol of the future.
Structured in an A–Z format, the book presents a curated collection of items that reflect the evolving relationship between people and peatlands. The objects are thoughtfully presented to highlight the dramatic changes in land use, environmental values, and cultural identity.
Transition is not intended as a comprehensive history; rather, it offers a compelling snapshot of a landscape in flux, a visual meditation on change, memory, and renewal. It acknowledges the ingenuity and resilience of those who worked the bogs, while also embracing the possibilities of a future where peatlands are reimagined.
Transition is a timely and thought-provoking book that will resonate with readers interested in Irish heritage, environmental change, and visual storytelling. It offers an opportunity for reflection on where we’ve come from, and where we’re going.
Come along to the book launch on December 3 at 6:30pm in Midland Books, Tullamore to meet the author, hear the story behind the book, and to celebrate the rich heritage and hopeful future of the peatlands.
The book will be available to purchase at the launch night at Midland Books and will also be available at Offaly History Bookshop, The Athlone Bookshop, Lough Boora Discovery Park, Birr Castle Demesne and Wilder and Gold, Ballymahon.
