Burke welcomes progress on M4 Bus Priority Lane
Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke has welcomed confirmation that the M4 Bus Priority Lane between Maynooth and Lucan/Leixlip is expected to open in early 2026.
He has been making ongoing representations to the minister for transport and Transport for Ireland (TFI) to progress the works as quickly as possible, given the delays and congestion currently faced by drivers and bus passengers on the route.
“Many people in Mullingar and surrounding areas have contacted me in recent months about how long it’s taking to reach Dublin in the mornings – in some cases over two hours to get to the city centre,” Minister Burke said.
“This is a serious quality-of-life issue for workers and families who are spending far too much time in traffic every day. That’s why I’ve been pushing hard for the Bus Priority Lane to be delivered without delay, and I welcome the progress that has now been confirmed.”
In a response to Minister Burke’s representations, TFI chief executive Lorcan O’Connor confirmed that civil works on the eastbound section of the M4 Bus Priority Measures pilot scheme, between Junction 6 and Junction 5, are now complete apart from the installation of environmental noise barriers. The barriers are due to be built in late 2025 or early 2026.
“Intelligent transport system works remain, and there are legislative changes progressing to allow for the opening of the Bus Priority Lane,” said Mr O’Connor, in a written response to representations.
“TII is liaising with the Department of Transport on this matter. It is currently anticipated that the opening of the Bus Priority Lane will be in Q1 of 2026.”
Minister Burke said: “When this lane opens, it will mean shorter, more predictable commutes for bus passengers and greater confidence in public transport as a real alternative to driving. That’s something that will benefit not only those travelling from Westmeath, but everyone using the M4,” he said.
“I’ll continue to work with TFI and the Dept of Transport to ensure this vital project is delivered as soon as possible.”
