200 new jobs as €50m invested in Ballinderry hospital

Charter Medical Group has announced a €50 million expansion of the Charter Medical Private Hospital at Ballinderry, Mullingar.

The development has been described as “one of the most significant private healthcare investments” ever made in Westmeath and reinforces the growing status of Mullingar as a regional centre for high-quality healthcare.

The project includes the development of new operating theatres, new endoscopy suites, and additional surgical and medical beds, all of which will significantly increase local capacity for high-demand procedures.

The investment will create 200 new jobs over the next two years, expanding on the existing workforce of more than 300 healthcare professionals.

The announcement follows a visit to the hospital by Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, alongside Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, during the recent Fine Gael Parliamentary Party think-in at the Mullingar Park Hotel.

Charter Medical Group is a leading healthcare provider , which operates facilities in Smithfield, Dublin and Mullingar. It will undertake the two-year capital expansion beginning in January 2026.

Minister Burke said the €50 million investment will bolster local employment: “This investment is a huge vote of confidence in Mullingar as a hub for advanced healthcare and will significantly improve patient access to surgical and diagnostic services.

“Around 200 jobs will be created, further positioning Mullingar as a centre for high-value employment in the healthcare sector.”

The investment will see CMPH adding three new theatres and two new endoscopy suites, 20 surgical beds and 20 day beds. This capacity is expected to come online by the end of 2026 – by 2027 the hospital will finish construction on a further 53 beds.

The Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment said the investment will augment the healthcare offering in the region.

“This project is a positive example of effective collaboration between the public and private sectors, delivering healthcare solutions that will help relieve pressure on public hospitals in the region, including those in Mullingar, Tullamore and Naas.”

Paula Gray, CEO of Charter Medical Private Hospital Mullingar, said the investment improves access for patients: “Our commitment is to deliver world-class care closer to home for patients across the midlands and beyond and create better access to critically needed services nationally as many of our patients come from across the country.

“This investment will enhance both our surgical and in-patient capacity and strengthen partnerships with the HSE and the NTPF to further reduce national waiting lists and create enhanced access to care for our health insurance partners.”

With a focus on delivering Healthcare for All, Charter Medical Private Hospital in Mullingar continues to play a vital role in supporting the public health system. A significant proportion of its patients come through public pathways, and the hospital provides essential capacity for services that remain in high demand nationally.
