Ballinalack collision causes N4 hold up

Motorists on the N4 are experiencing significant delays as traffic diversions are in place following a road traffic collision in Ballinalack.

Garda Press Office confirmed the collision that has vehicles re-routed on the national primary route: “Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of a traffic collision that occurred on the N4 road in Ballinalack near Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. Local diversions are currently in place,” the statements said.

Gardai say there is no further information available on the incident at this time.

Gardaí say investigations are ongoing after a serious road traffic collision on the N4 at Ballinalack this afternoon, Wednesday December 10.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the incident, which involved a truck and a car and which occurred shortly after 1.30pm.

The driver of the car, a male in his 40s, was transported by air ambulance to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

A female passenger in the car, aged in her 50s, was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.

Any road users who have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N4 between Edgeworthstown and Mullingar between 1.15pm and 1.45pm on Wednesday 10th December 2025, are asked to make it available to investigating officers.
