Rochfortbridge Social Services celebrate 50th anniversary

The 50th anniversary of Rochfortbridge Social Services was celebrated in style in the festively festooned St Joseph’s Parish Hall last Thursday when more than 80 local people sat down to a sumptuous meal.

One woman who has been part of the organisation since its foundation is Mary Arthur from Rahanine.

Mary, who celebrated her birthday and the birth of her first great grandchild the day before, received a special presentation to mark her devotion to the organisation since it began in 1975.

The presentation of a beautiful Genesis creation was made on behalf of the committee by Breda Daly, chairperson, and Anne Byrne, treasurer.

“Mary stands today as the sole remaining original committee member, a remarkable testament to her unwavering commitment, compassion and sense of community. For 50 years – half a century – she has given her time, her energy and her heart to ensuring that the people of Rochfortbridge are supported, cared for and connected,” Breda said.

She added: “Over the course of her incredible tenure, Mary has served as secretary for more than 30 years. That alone speaks volumes about the trust placed in her and the essential role she has played. Her attention to detail, her reliability and her steady leadership have shaped the smooth running of the committee for decades. She has been the person who keeps things moving, keeps people informed and keeps the work grounded in purpose.”

Breda went on to say that Mary’s contributions go far beyond titles and roles. “She has been central to organising the many vital services and events that enrich the lives of those in our community.

From the bi-monthly chiropody clinics that so many depend on to the much-loved day trips that bring joy and companionship, to the Christmas parties that create warmth and celebration each year – Mary has been at the heart of it all,” she remarked.

“Through every challenge and every change over the last 50 years, Mary has remained a rock for this committee – a steady, dependable presence who has always put others first. Her dedication is an example to us all, and her legacy will continue to inspire long into the future,” Breda said.

“With immense gratitude, deep respect and great affection”, she called on Mary to accept “this well-deserved recognition”.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner at the function, Mary commented on the changes since Rochfortbridge Social Services began in 1975. “We always had a Christmas party, at first it was a tea party, and we used to go on tours and have picnics on the roadside. It all improved as we went along,” she said.

Mary is a native of Monaghan and worked in Tullamore and Mullingar. She married Rochfortbridge man Brendan Arthur, who passed away in 2016. She has two daughters and two sons, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild, baby Noah.

Two of the guests at the Christmas party spoke highly of the excellent job done by the organisers.

Margaret Smyth from Rochfortbridge said she looks forward to the party. “It’s brilliant, the highlight of my year,” she said.

Maureen Ennis, Gneevebawn, was equally effusive. She has been coming to the party for years. “I used to come with my late husband Joe and now I come on my own,” she said. “It’s a great night out, the food is wonderful, and it is something to look forward to.”

Three months of work go in to making this great night and Breda Daly outlined some of what it involves. She paid tribute to the Tyrrellspass Castle, who do the catering, and Very Rev William Coleman, PP, and the parish, who provide the beverages.

The after-dinner entertainment was provided by Declan Feery from Tyrrellspass.

Breda said the elaborate decorations were the work of “the great hall committee – Martina Gahan, Eddie Tracey and Paul Foran who got the hall ready. All the local businesses were outstandingly supportive, giving spot prizes, she said.

“We get a lot support locally – it’s a great little community,” Breda said.

Breda also thanked Westmeath County Council, the HSE, North Midlands Credit Union, Lumcloon Energy, and all who support the efforts of the social services committee.

Other committee members along with Breda are, chairperson, Patricia McCarthy, secretary, Mary Arthur, assistant secretary, and Anne Byrne, treasurer.
