Judge says man ‘went to lot of trouble’ appearing in court in shorts and T-shirt
A judge called into question the dress code of a man who appeared at the last District Court sitting of the year wearing shorts and a T-shirt.
Jonathan Sweeney (28) 62 Caltragh Crescent, Sligo, turned up at Thursday’s Mullingar District Court to face two shoplifting charges at grocery stores in Mullingar on November 27 last.
Mr Sweeney was charged with stealing alcohol valued at €20 from Spar, Dominick Street, Mullingar, Westmeath, and a further €166 in toys and alcohol from Lidl, Patrick Street, Mullingar, Westmeath on the same day.
Sgt Sheila Kenny said directions were for summary disposal, meaning that the case had been deemed suitable by the DPP to be heard in the District Court.
Mr Sweeney did not enter a plea as his defence solicitor Louis Kiernan applied for disclosure in order to take instructions from his client.
However, it was the attire of Mr Sweeney that appeared to draw the wrath of Judge Owens: “I see Mr Sweeney went to a lot of trouble this morning.”
Legal aid was granted to Mr Kiernan after he confirmed his client was not working at present.
Mr Sweeney was remanded on bail to February 12, 2026 when a plea or date for hearing is expected to be made.
