The St Kenny NS choir.

Pitch perfect performance by St Kenny NS choir and Mullingar Choral Society

This year, the Mullingar Choral Society returned under former director, Fintan Farrelly. He led a memorable Christmas Concert that included many well-known carols sung to settings by Fintan himself. A new piece, ‘A Promise Born’ was dedicated by its writer, Ross Xanthopoulos, to his late father Demetriou.

The choir of St Kenny National School, taught so ably by Joanna Fagan, were much appreciated by the audience.

The highlights of the programme were the soloists, Ami Hewitt, soprano, and Paul Kiernan, trumpet. They combined to present George Frederick Handel’s Let the Bright Seraphim from his Oratorio, Sampson. A little later came the sublime Eternal Source of Light Divine.

Paul and Ami were recently married; congratulations!

Towards the end of the concert, guest conductor, Vincent Dolan, who is also a tenor in the choir, led the audience in a medley of Christmas songs.

Ami and the society sang O Holy Night by Adolphe Adam, a must have at any Christmas concert. Finally, the whole audience, as is traditional, stood up for Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from his Messiah. Floral presentations were made to Ami and Joanna at the end by the society president, Patrick Pilkington.

The evening was honoured by the presence of patrons Bishop Tom Deenihan and the Rev Ian Horner, Rector of All Saints and, of course by the large audience whose appreciative presence is much valued by the Mullingar Choral Society.
