The Cluain Lir choir.

Hitting the right note for Christmas at Cluain Lir

Christmas is the busiest time of the year at the Cluain Lir Community Nursing Unit in Mullingar, and the staff are always looking for ideas to enhance the lives of residents.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner at the carol service on Friday evening, Karina Browne, one of two activities coordinators, said that last year, one of the residents said they had been in a choir and would like start singing again.

“So we started a choir for church and that has led us to tonight,” said Karina. “We decided that we’d do a little raffle sale, do a little bit of fundraising and get all the families involved, and then it’s fantastic because it’s the residents and the staff coming together to have a bit of fun as well, which is so important – so that’s what tonight’s about.”

Marty Monaghan, who works at Cluain Lir, played music on the evening. “He’s an absolute credit,” said Karina. “He plays music for us all year round on all of the units, and entertains the residents throughout the year, and all our big occasions are actually spent with Marty on guitar. We also have Reverend Ian Horner.

We first met Ian a couple of weeks ago during our ecumenical service, and he’s decided to join our carol singing as well, which was lovely.”

Tony Irwin sang a solo, and everyone had a great evening.
