Tributes at council to the late Egbert Moran

Former councillor, the late Egbert Moran was remembered at the November meeting of Westmeath County Council. Cllr Frankie Keena said Mr Moran served as a Fianna Fail councillor from 1995 to 2009, and was cathaoirleach and mayor of Athlone in 2003. He served town and county well, he said. He proposed that a vote of sympathy be passed with Mr Moran’s wife, Mary, and family.

He was seconded by Cllr Paul Hogan, who served with Egbert on the council from 2004 to 2009. He described him as a political stalwart in Athlone, serving twice as mayor, and as mayor of the county in 2003. He said Mr Moran was involved in business, golf, Buccaneers and Garrycastle.

Cllr Mick Dollard said Mr Moran was a decent, upstanding man: “You always knew where you stood with Egbert.” He will be sadly missed by the many organisations with which he was involved, he added.

Cllr Ken Glynn said Egbert was one of the first people he met when he joined the council in 2003. He was an excellent public representative and a good friend of his father (former senator, Camillus Glynn), he remarked.

Cllr Vinny McCormack, cathaoirleach of the Athlone Moate Municipal District, thanked the council for providing a book of condolence and for supplying the council flag for Egbert’s coffin.

Cllr David Jones, on his own behalf and on behalf of Cllr Julie McCourt, joined in offering condolences to Mr Moran’s family, as did the cathaoirleach, Cllr Aoife Davitt.

Chief executive, Barry Kehoe, said Egbert was one of the first councillors he encountered when he went to Athlone as director in 2005. He was a great character, a lovely man and a great councillor, and he always worked closely with the executive in Athlone, he stated.

Mr Kehoe said Mr Moran, who was a great loss to the council, kept up his interest in local affairs and always had a comments about how the council was performing. It was always great to meet him, he said.
