Young artists celebrate success in road safety poster competition

Young artists from across Westmeath are celebrating after being honoured at the 2025 Road Safety Poster Competition prizegiving, held at Mullingar Library on Tuesday December 16.

Westmeath Libraries hosted the event to recognise children whose colourful and eye-catching posters promoted safer road use for everyone. The annual competition aims to raise awareness among children, spark family conversations and support the principles of Vision Zero, which seeks to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities on Irish roads.

Children were invited to design posters around themes such as Be safe, be seen, Cycle safety, Safe routes to school, Share the road and Making walking safe.

Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, Cllr Aoife Davitt, presented the prizes alongside the council’s road safety officer, Colm Smith. Cllr Davitt said road safety remained a priority for the local authority, while Mr Smith thanked students, schools, teachers and parents for their strong support and for encouraging positive road behaviour throughout the community.

Judges praised the winning entries for their clear messages and for highlighting how small actions can make a big difference in keeping roads safe.

The overall winner was Jamal Ibrahim, who also received a €200 contribution on behalf of his school, Presentation Snr, towards a Cycle Safe programme.
