‘Urgent’ need for traffic calming measure at Delvin
A warning that there is an “urgent” need for traffic calming measures at the Mullingar side of Delvin was issued by Cllr David Jones at the December meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.
He formally proposed that the district apply for funding for a design scheme for much such works, to which the official response from the district stated that it is currently liaising with the Transportation Section and TII on the issue.
Cllr Jones commented that he was aware of all the schemes ongoing at the moment for Delvin and Clonmellon, but that over a number of years, a lot of queries have come in from that end of Delvin about what measures could be put in place. He added that he hoped that down the line, it might be possible to get a safe crossing route at the junction.
Cllr Niall Gaffney lent his support to the call, saying that that location was a pinch point, and that safety there needs to be improved.
Also supporting the motion was Cllr Denis Leonard, who remarked that Delvin was unusual in that it was one of the towns that has not yet been bypassed, despite being on the N52, the road that runs from Nenagh to Dundalk, and is one of the major arteries in the country.
Crowenstown NS
At the same meeting, Cllr Jones requested that the district install pencil style bollards at the Junction at Crowenstown National School to stop cars parking at the corner of the school.
“It’s just a small area, and they never look for a lot in fairness,” Cllr Jones told officials.
He welcomed the official written reply from the council stating that the officials would consider the installation of pencil bollards and footpath works at Crowenstown school as part of the 2026 works estimates.
Support for Cllr Jones’s call came from Cllr Niall Gaffney, who said the road at that location is very busy.
