Council still intend to build link road on former boys school site in Kilbeggan

Westmeath County Council intend to use the land acquired on the site of the old Boys School in Kilbeggan for the construction of a link road.

That was the response given to a motion tabled in the name of Cllr Liam McDaniel at the January meeting of Athlone Moate Municipal District which queried what plans the local authority has for the future use of the site.

Cllr McDaniel, who was absent from the meeting, had requested that his motion be moved by his council colleague and Cathaoirleach of the municipal district, Cllr Vinny McCormack,

The motion asked the council to “develop and outline their plans” for the future use of the old school site at Moate Road in Kilbeggan.

The response stated that the lands in question were acquired “to construct a link road” and that“remains an objective” of the council, as per Objective 8.47 of the County Development Plan.

Kilbeggan Boys NS ceased to exist as a standalone school in 1997 when it amalgamated with the Convent of Mercy NS to form Scoil an Chlochair. The building which housed the school was subsequently demolished to make way for redevelopment, including a new link road.
