Driver clocked at 140kmh on N4 near Multyfarnham during bank holiday road safety campaign

A driver doing 140kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N4 near Multyfarnham was among those recorded in the An Garda Síochána enhanced Road Safety and Traffic Enforcement campaign over the St Brigid’s bank holiday weekend.

Over the course weekend, there were two fatalities as a result of two fatal traffic collisions on Irish roads and 14 serious injury collisions resulting in 15 serious injuries.

A garda statement also said that 13 persons have died on Irish roads to date in 2026.

A total of 188 persons died on Irish Roads in 2025; 14 persons died on Irish roads in January 2025.

From Friday 30 January to Monday 2 February (inclusive), An Garda Síochána and mobile and fixed GoSafe cameras detected nearly 3,500 motorists speeding. The highest volume of detections was on bank holiday Monday, when there were more than 800 speeding detections.

Almost 200 (193) drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Nearly 400 drivers were detected for driving while using a mobile phone.

More than 660 vehicles were detained by members of An Garda Síochána, 50% for no insurance.

Notable top speeds detected over the bank holiday Weekend included:

• 95kmh in a 50kmh zone on the Malahide Road, Dublin 3

• 90kmh in a 50kmh zone on the R405, Celbridge, County Kildare

• 86kmh in a 50kmh zone on the R183, Doohamlet, County Monaghan

• 134kmh in a 60kmh zone on the Katherine Tynan Road, Dublin 24

• 123kmh in a 60kmh zone on the R154 in Trim, County Meath

• 95kmh in a 60kmh zone on the R267, Bundoran, County Donegal

• 154kmh in an 80kmh zone on the N16 in Glencar, County Sligo

• 130kmh in an 80kmh zone on the R239 in Fahan, County Donegal

• 113kmh in an 80kmh zone on the N59 in Wesport, County Mayo

• 190kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N4, Aughamore, County Leitrim

• 173kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N18 in Ballinacurra (Weston), Limerick

• 140kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N4, Multyfarnham, County Westmeath

• Don’t drive distracted

• Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs

• Slow Down; Always drive within the posted legal speed limit and/ or at an appropriate speed to the prevailing conditions

• Always wear a seatbelt
