Grace's Law banning scramblers due in the coming weeks
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State Seán Canney are updating the Cabinet today (February 4) on regulations to ban scramblers in public places.
As reported last week, the ban is expected to take effect in the coming weeks. In the meantime, a proposal has been made to increase daily fees on seized scramblers.
Speaking outside the Cabinet, Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that the new legislation will be called Grace’s Law.
This follows a suggestion made by the mother of Grace Lynch, who sadly passed away on January 25.
The regulations will allow legal clarity and fully ban scramblers from being used in any public spaces.
Tánaiste Simon Harris said: “If you use a scrambler on a public, that should be seized and that should be destroyed.
“This can't be a question of taking the scrambler off someone for a few hours. Somebody is going back and asking for it back.
“There was a provision in relation to banning them from public spaces, and it seems a lot of that was never commenced.”
Along with the rules for scramblers coming into place, there will also be further restrictions put in place for e-bikes and e-scooters.
