Mullingar flying Purple Flag in 2026
Mullingar has been awarded the Purple Flag accreditation for its evening and night-time economy, following an assessment carried out by expert assessors last November.
The Purple Flag, similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, aims to raise standards and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 5pm and 5am.
The Purple Flag accreditation is an internationally recognised standard which shows that Mullingar has proven to be a prime destination for a safe, enjoyable, and diverse night-time experience.
Key successes in Mullingar’s submission include:
• Community First Responders, providing vital services within the Purple Flag area and across County Westmeath.
• A rich heritage of music, performance, and the arts, enhancing the town’s cultural vibrancy.
• The Garda Community Bus, offering a unique point of access and engagement for local groups and families.
Mullingar’s Purple Flag partnership was also commended in the assessment. The strong collaboration between local businesses, community organisations, the local authority, and the gardaí was instrumental in creating a well-rounded and cohesive evening and night-time experience.
James Bourke, president of Mullingar Chamber of Commerce, said: “Mullingar’s Purple Flag accreditation is a testament to the town’s commitment to providing a welcoming and vibrant environment for everyone. It’s a clear indication of the warm hospitality and safe environment visitors to our town receive.
“Mullingar Chamber extend sincere thanks to the businesses who operate at evening or night-time hours, An Garda Síochána and Westmeath County Council for their continued support in helping Mullingar retain the Purple Flag over the past nine years.”
