Argentine Ambassador to visit Mullingar Library
Her Excellency, Ana Laura Cachaza, Ambassador of Argentina, will visit Mullingar Library on Tuesday February 24 to mark the conclusion of the Argentina Emigration Oral History Project. A collaboration between Longford and Westmeath County Councils and the Longford Westmeath Argentina Society, the project involved interviewing people in both counties who have family connections in Argentina.
The project was led by the Heritage Office in Westmeath County Council and the Heritage Office and the Archives Service in Longford County Council. Adrian Roche of The History Trail, who specialises in oral history, was contracted to record the interviews.
Ambassador Cachaza will present each participant with a copy of their interview and copies will be held by both county councils for future research.
An cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, Cllr Aoife Davitt, welcomes the ambassador’s visit: “We are delighted that Ambassador Cachaza will be with us for the event. While she has been in Westmeath previously, this will be her first visit to Mullingar.”
Heritage officer Melanie McQuade says the oral history project is important in maintaining awareness of the connection with Argentina. “Many Westmeath families have relatives in Argentina. This project will be very important in helping to preserve knowledge of those links,” she said.
The event in Mullingar Library will begin at 2.30pm on 24 February, and all are welcome to attend.
