Long awaited road safety improvements for Killucan
A €250k investment in road safety measures for Killucan will address many of the concerns expressed by local residents. Westmeath County Council has committed substantial investment to the Killucan area which will improve safety for drivers and pedestrians in the area.
Fine Gael Councillor Emily Wallace raised the issue with Westmeath County Council for some time, most recently through a formal motion, highlighting ongoing concerns from local residents and the need for improved safety measures.
Safety around Columba College and St Joseph's Rathwire was a particular motivation in campaigning for progress on the works.
Following a meeting of Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District confirmation of the local authority's decision was welcomed by Cllr Wallace: “I am delighted that Westmeath County Council has agreed to tackle the road safety concerns in Killucan,” the elected representative said.
“I’ve raised these concerns following representations from locals and I’ve witnessed the increases in speed myself on recent visits to the area,” Cllr Wallace told the Examiner, “I'm delighted to see these funds targeting the Killucan area, firstly on the L1015, Killucan Village to St Joseph’s Rathwire. Also, there is a commitment as part of the Safe Routes to School Programme that Columba College, Killucan, will have ramps installed on the Killucan to Cloughan Road by the end of February 2026.
“Engineering is such an important part of the solution to road safety, but I still call on road users to take responsibility for their actions, observe speed limits and be safe to be seen,” Cllr Wallace concluded.
