North Midlands Credit Union (NMCU) Primary Schools Quiz is one of the biggest events in the Credit Union calendar and it attracts a huge crowd to the Mullingar Park Hotel each year.
The quiz is very much in the spirit of the credit union movement and the role it plays in communities – it’s about promoting education and engagement in local communities, “and we are proud that it is such a fixture for so many”, said a spokesperson for NMCU.
“It was fantastic to see such a huge turnout of students, parents and teachers again this year. We have more than 70 schools in our common bond and with space constraints in venues, much like last year, we deemed it necessary to hold two quizzes over two nights.”
There were two categories: Competition A, designated for students under 11 years of age, and Competition B, for students under 13 years of age. The first quiz was held in The Mall, Longford on Friday February 6, and the second was held on Monday February 9 in the Mullingar Park Hotel.
“We were delighted to welcome 33 schools to the quiz in the Mullingar Park Hotel, made up of 65 teams and 261 students taking part.”
The winners of Competition A were St Mary’s NS, Raharney, second were All Saints NS, and in joint third place were St Patrick’s NS, Ballinagore, and Dalystown NS.
St Mary’s NS, Raharney also won Competition B; All Saints NS were second place, and Gaelscoil an Mhuilinn were third.
In The Mall, Longford NMCU welcomed 24 schools to the quiz, made up of 43 teams and 172 students taking part. St Teresa’s NS, Killoe won Competition A,ahead of Cloontuskert NS, and Whitehall NS in third place.
In Competition B, Melview NS were first place, St Mel’s NS were and St Teresa’s NS, Killoe were third.
“Thank you to all the parents and teachers for their continued support of our schools quiz and to the staff of North Midlands Credit Union for making the event such a success.
“Both quiz nights in Mullingar and Longford were of a high standard and every school performed exceptionally well.”
The winners of Competition A and B in both quizzes will progress to the next round, representing North Midlands Credit Union in the hope of making it to the all-Ireland national final.
