New coaching staff on board for Westmeath GAA
Westmeath Coaching and Games News
Westmeath GAA has welcomed the two newest members of their coaching and games staff, Jason Daly and Philomena Kennedy.
Philomena Kennedy has taken over as the Athlone Area GDC, working specifically with Southern Gaels and Garrycastle.
Philomena has worked in Meath over the last number of years, and has been highly involved with her home club of Killucan, gaining experience in a variety of club settings.
Jason Daly is working as a Participation Officer with Tubberclair and Moate All Whites and comes with plenty of experience from working in Meath over the past year, in addition to his vast playing experience as a goalkeeper with St. Loman's Mullingar and Westmeath.
Southern Gaels has welcomed Philomena 'Fee' Kennedy to the club in her new role.
"She will be working with both Southern Gaels and Garrycastle in promoting and developing hurling and football in the Athlone area. She will be working primarily with schools, especially national schools, for the moment. She will also be involved in coach development and training with both clubs. Both clubs are looking forward to working with her and appreciate her commitment and dedication to Gaelic games," said Southern Gaels.
Award 1 Coaching Course
An award 1 coaching course for both football and hurling coaches started last week, with an online webinar followed by the first practical session for football coaches on Thursday evening in Marist College Athlone. Twenty coaches attended the practical session on Thursday, ran by Robbie Forde, Alan Mullen and Darren Magee, which focused on technical proficiency. Thanks to all the coaches who attended, to the staff for facilitating and to Marist College for hosting.
Development Squads
With adverse weather conditions, all squads were in training action last weekend. The hurling squads were hosted by Ringtown whilst the football squads were in TUS Midlands, Athlone. Thanks to both Ringtown and TUS Athlone for facilitating.
Two football squads are set to game action this coming weekend; the U15 footballers will take on their Laois counterparts in the LOETB Centre of Excellence in Portlaoise, preceding the senior footballers' league clash in O'Moore Park at 6pm. Meanwhile, the U14 footballers are set to travel to the Faithful Fields on Saturday morning to take on Offaly.
