Nothing trivial about funds raised at Delvin quiz

The Delvin St Patrick’s Parade committee had an extremely successful quiz and raffle night in Gaffney’s Bar and Lounge, on Friday evening last, to raise funds for the annual parade, taking place this year on March 15.

The quiz raised more than €1,000, and a spokesperson for the committee said to the Westmeath Examiner on the evening: "We would like to thank everyone who came, donated prizes, and Bernard O’Byrne, our quizmaster and Mary Gaffney for hosting us."

Committee chairman Cllr David Jones said preparations will be picking up through the next two weeks: "We will be continuing to fundraise and need everyone’s support to keep the parade going." Condolences were expressed on the night for committee members Mary Carroll and Michael Kenny, who sadly passed away since last year’s parade. Cllr Jones gave a heartfelt speech on the night outlining their dedication to the parade and the committee: "Throughout their illnesses, they attended meetings and showed their dedication, which shows the wider dedication of the committee members throughout the years. "

He concluded saying: "We want to thank the correctors on the night, Linda, Willie Kenny and Tadhg Powell."

Evident as well as the strong community spirit in Delvin, was the great sense of humour among all who participated.

On Sunday, the committee thanked volunteers Martin, Colin, Liam and David for putting up the flags in the village and reminded people to "decorate their windows for the best dressed window competition". The Manna Charity shop as the first to decorate their window for this year’s competition.
