Presentation Senior School mark Seachtain na Gaeilge 2026

Presentation Senior School celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge – Irish language, culture, heritage and music – last week, finishing with a concert in the school on Friday.

Each morning pupils listened to an Irish song, linking it to local and national history; for example, last Tuesday they listened to Grace, the iconic song written by Mullingar brothers Frank and Sean O’Meara which tells the tragic story of the execution of Joseph Mary Plunkett in 1916, only hours after his marriage to Grace Gifford.

Pupils also participated in an art competition and quiz but the highlight of the week was the Seachtain na Gaeilge concert. Every class performed a song, dance or poem to showcase Ireland’s rich literary and musical heritage. There were performances from individual pupils and the school choir, too.

Leah Byrne and Keira Watters played ‘Down by the Salley Gardens’ by WB Yeats on the tin whistle, and the choir sang ‘Isle of hope, Isle of Tears’ by Brendan Graham, which moved everyone as it told the story of 15-year-old Annie Moore, the first person to pass through Ellis Island, New York on January 1, 1892.

It was a great start to the St Patrick’s celebrations.
