Council ‘pursuing option’ to sell Church Street property
Westmeath County Council are “pursuing the option of selling” on the open market a town centre property that has been lying idle since the local authority HQ opened in 2009.
At the March meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad, Cllr Mick Dollard tabled a motion asking if the executive could advise members of the plans (if any) Westmeath County Council have for “the long vacant building” at Church Avenue that previously housed the old Motor Taxation Office and the library.
District engineer Pat Kavanagh told the members the property was “up for sale”. He said the Property Management Section of the local authority has advised that the council are still “pursuing the option of selling this building on the open market”.
The building was closed as part of the transition to a modern facility when the Westmeath County Council buildings were opened on June 11, 2009. That opening was part of the Mullingar Central development at Mount Street. The €40 million project was completed over a two-year construction period and was delivered on budget.
Cllr Dollard told the meeting he hoped a buyer for the large town centre on Church Street property could be found soon.
