Delvin parade celebrates movies and TV of the past

The Delvin St Patrick’s Day Parade was hailed as “an amazing success” by parade committee chairman Cllr David Jones following the vibrant celebration held on Sunday, March 15. This year’s event embraced the theme ‘Movies and TV Shows of the Past’, and it brought creativity, colour, and entertainment to the village.

A minute’s silence was held at the start of the parade in memory of committee members Michael Kenny and Mary Carroll, and all who have passed away in the last year.

The parade was led by piper Duncan Coull, while the grand marshals were the family of the late Michael Kenny, former president of Delvin GAA Club and a long-time supporter of many local organisations. The Kenny family proudly represented Michael, who passed away last year, in what was described as a fitting tribute to his dedication to the community. Following them were the Delvin Senior B Hurlers.

Festivities began before the parade when the Doolan Cullen School of Irish Dancing performed for the crowd. Cllr Jones, who also served as MC on the main stage, welcomed the large gathering and helped guide the day’s entertainment.

Music played a major role in the celebrations, and the Kentstown and Seneschalstown Accordion Band returned to entertain the crowd.

The approximately 40 floats brought popular films and television shows to life through costumes, acting and creative displays.

In a move to encourage participation, the parade committee introduced a special €500 cash prize for the best float based on the theme of movies and TV shows. Prizes will also be awarded in a number of categories, and this year’s trophies were created by Eddie’s Glass Art.

One of the most popular awards of the day was the Best Dressed Mammy, which was won by Josephine Moran as the parade fell on the same day as Mother’s Day.

The parade was supported by a wide range of sponsors, including Westmeath County Council, Energia Renewables and many local businesses, whose contributions helped make it possible.

Fundraising efforts for the parade included a successful community quiz night and the ongoing raffle, both of which received strong support from residents and businesses.

Speaking after the event, Cllr Jones praised the community effort behind the parade. He thanked the volunteers who helped organise the event, the businesses that provided sponsorship, and the many people who assisted with preparations, such as putting up flags around the village.

“A lot of work goes into organising the parade,” he said. “The committee has been meeting every week, and it’s fantastic to see the community and local businesses getting behind it once again.”

With lively performances, imaginative floats and strong community involvement, this year’s Delvin St Patrick’s Parade once again proved to be a highlight of the local calendar.
