Mullingar 1916 Centenary Memorial Annual Easter Commemoration

The 1916 subcommittee of Mullingar Tidy Towns held its Annual 1916 Easter Rising Commemoration at the Mullingar 1916 Centenary Memorial at 12 noon on Easter Monday, April 6 2026.

The chairperson of Mullingar Tidy Town, Cllr Bill Collentine, paid tribute to the brave Irishmen and Irishwomen who served Ireland during the revolutionary period. All republican men and women from Mullingar who served during the revolutionary period were especially remembered at the ceremony.

As the national flag of Ireland gently flew at half mast, Cllr Collentine laid a laurel wreath in remembrance on behalf of the people of Mullingar. That was followed by historian Jason McKevitt reading the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

The short and poignant ceremony concluded with the Irish national flag being raised to full-mast as a minute’s silence was held in honour of all who served and died for the cause of Irish freedom.

The Mullingar 1916 Centenary Memorial was unveiled on Easter Monday 2017 by the 1916 Centenary Memorial Sub-committee of Mullingar Tidy Towns.

The memorial has the distinction of being the only 1916 memorial anywhere that has incorporated within it a surviving piece of granite that was once located within the front portico of the GPO in Dublin, which survived the Easter Rising of 1916 having being bombarded by British forces during Easter week.

The members of the 1916 Centenary Memorial sub-committee responsible for this memorial are, Cllr Bill Collentine (chairperson, Mullingar Tidy Towns), Jason McKevitt (historian), Eamon McGowan, Tomás Nally, Ger O’Connor and Willie Collentine jnr.
