Large crowd on Market Square in support of fuel cost protest

Several hundred people gathered earlier today at the Market Square in Mullingar in a show of solidarity with those protesting in Dublin and elsewhere over the cost of fuel.

On a national day of protest, there were similar gatherings in other towns and cities, as the cabinet was recalled and an announcement from government is expected later today (Sunday).

They say that an extension of the diesel rebate scheme beyond June is also possible while measures for farmers and the fishing sector are also expected, particularly for credit lines and cash flow.

On the question of further cuts to excise duty on fuel and oil, the government are in contact with the European Commission to see if there is the flexibility on that.

In a statement issued on Friday, Sorca Clarke, TD, accused the government of being detached from reality when it comes to the crisis hitting home heating oil and other fuels.

Speaking after the publication of new data by the CSO that shows home heating oil has hit it highest prices on record and petrol and diesel the highest since 2022, Teachta Clarke said: “Home heating oil hit the highest prices since record began 30 years ago yet the government has done nothing to help people suffering from this energy shock.

“They are detached from the reality facing over 700,000 households that rely on oil to heat their homes now facing the highest prices on record.

“Sinn Féin, a month ago, brought forward legislation to reduce the cost of home heating oil by cutting all excise duty on the fuel so many people depend on.

“Shamefully the government voted against Sinn Féin’s proposals and did absolutely nothing to reduce the cost of home heating oil for workers and families.

“Not only have they failed to act. They are planning to make matters worse when they increase tax on home heating oil in a matter of weeks.

“The government need to come to their senses and reduce the cost of home heating oil and other fuels urgently.”
