Finea–Abbeylara greenway project advances as council target EU funding
Plans to develop the long-mooted Finea to Abbeylara Inny River greenway have taken a step forward after Westmeath County Council confirmed it has submitted an expression of interest under the EU Just Transition START programme.
The proposal, which includes provision for a footbridge crossing of the River Inny, was brought before the April meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad, when members were told the project is now entering a competitive funding process involving further engagement with Pobal.
Cllr Alfie Devine, who raised the subject for discussion, welcomed the progress, saying it was important to continue pushing the project forward to deliver a greenway in the north of the county.
The motion received cross-party support, Cllr Denis Leonard noting his long-standing interest in developing a wider network of walking and cycling routes across north Westmeath, linking towns including Kinnegad, Killucan, Delvin, Castlepollard and Finea.
He said such routes would support tourism, local businesses and greater public access to natural amenities.
Cllr David Jones also backed the proposal, highlighting the potential benefits for rural tourism and local enterprise in Finea and surrounding areas.
Council officials confirmed that a feasibility study was completed in 2024 and that engagement has taken place with Longford County Council.
They said Pobal is due to meet with the project team shortly as part of the next stage of assessment under the funding programme.
