Innovative new kit for Mullingar litter-pickers

Mullingar Tidy Towns have launched a new volunteer litter-picking initiative aimed at keeping the town looking its best for everyone who lives in and visits it.

As part of that, volunteers will receive specially designed litter-picking bag, similar to shopping bags, with sturdy handles, making them easy to carry while out for a stroll or walking the dog.

Each volunteer pack will include a litter-picker and a high-visibility vest, clearly marked as a Mullingar Tidy Towns volunteer, along with recognition of the local sponsor supporting the project.

Cllr Bill Collentine, chairperson of Mullingar Tidy Towns, said: “We are especially grateful to the many Mullingar businesses who have already come on board. Every 50 bags will be sponsored by a different local business, showing the strong community spirit that makes Mullingar such a special place.

“We would also like to sincerely thank our existing groups and volunteers, who work tirelessly throughout the year. Their dedication, pride, and ongoing efforts have helped make Mullingar the clean and welcoming town it is today.

“This new initiative builds on that great work and aims to support and grow our volunteer community even further.”

Cllr Collentine said the response so far has been extremely positive, even at this early stage, and “we are hopeful that by leading by example, more people will be encouraged to get involved”.

He said that with Mullingar nominated for Ireland’s Tidiest Town in 2026, there is an opportunity to build momentum and welcome new volunteers to join the already committed team.

“While our town is already in great shape, there is always room to improve the overall appearance.

“A small effort by many people can make a big difference. Whether it’s picking up a few pieces of litter during a daily walk or getting involved more regularly, every action counts.

“By working together and taking pride in our surroundings, we can continue to keep Mullingar clean, attractive, and welcoming for ourselves, our families, and all who visit.”
