Westmeath County Council honour Coláiste Mhuire win

Westmeath County Council hosted a Civic Reception on Monday evening, May 18, at Belvedere House, Gardens & Park, to celebrate Coláiste Mhuire’s incredible achievement in winning the All Ireland Post Primary Schools Senior A Hogan Cup.

The local authority marked the phenomenal milestone for the school, the players, and the entire community following a co-proposal by Cllr Aoife Davitt and Cllr Ken Glynn.

On his Instagram page, Cllr Ken Glynn said of the achievement of his Alma Mater: “What a magical time it is for football in Westmeath and well done to the entire team on such a fantastic achievement.”

The Coláiste Mhuire's senior Gaelic football side cemented its place in the roll of honours of All Ireland winners in a thrilling Croke Park encounter that had everything. Coláiste Mhuire's victory over Tralee CBS in the Hogan Cup final was a monumental accomplishment by a dedicated panel of players, but also by the school.

Three goals in the first half and the injury-time scores from Finn Higgins and Will Scahill sealed the win for the Mullingar school on a scoreline of 3-11 to 1-16.

Since 1946 only 31 schools have secured a Hogan Cup. This is only the second Westmeath school to secure the title, though Carmelite College, Moate have been there three times.

Cllr Mick Dollard, Mayor of the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District said the Civic Reception was a great occasion, and an opportunity to mark a momentous occasion: “The team and some of their family members joined us at at Belvedere House, Gardens & Park

“Cathaoirleach Aoife Davies made the presentation of the certificates to each individual team member and to their coaches. Public reps, including Minister Peter Burke, Cllr Ken Glynn, Cllr Tom Farrell and Liam McDaniel were there.”

Cllr Dollard said the Civic Reception came at an opportune time: “It was a great occasion, made even more poignant by the fact that the county had won the Leinster Championship the day before.”
