A workout that works for everyone in Kinnegad

A Kinnegad fitness coach is being recognised for helping people build confidence, improve their health, and feel part of their community through inclusive training sessions.

Enda Leonard, who runs EL Fitness, has received a Positive Futures Welcome Award for the supportive environment he creates when residents with an intellectual disability from supported living service at Cluain Farm visit his gym.

Enda works with Aoife, James and Kevin, who attend regular sessions to support their health and wellbeing.

Some initially joined to help manage conditions such as diabetes and arthritis but have continued thanks to the positive atmosphere and encouragement.

Paul Farrell, service manager with Positive Futures, said: “Enda has a lovely way with the people we support and works with them on what they wish to achieve. He creates an environment where everyone feels comfortable, included and encouraged to do their best.

“The classes aren’t just about physical health, as they build confidence, friendships and a real sense of belonging.”

Aoife enjoys the more social classes in particular, where there’s plenty of opportunity to chat, have fun and stay active.

The Positive Futures Welcome Award recognises those who go the extra mile to ensure people with intellectual disabilities, autism or acquired brain injury feel valued and included in their communities.
