Special build-up planned in Salthill on Sunday

There is a genuine sense of occasion building ahead of Sunday afternoon’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Round 2A clash between Galway and Westmeath at Pearse Stadium, Salthill (2pm), with a huge travelling support expected to make the journey west.

Fresh from ending a 22-year wait for provincial glory and being crowned Leinster champions for the first time since 2004, Westmeath supporters have embraced this summer in extraordinary numbers and it is anticipated that well over 10,000 Westmeath followers will descend on Salthill for an eagerly awaited fixture.

The atmosphere around the county has been building steadily since that historic Leinster triumph and Sunday's meeting with Galway presents another opportunity for Westmeath to test themselves against one of the leading sides in the country.

History between the counties is relatively limited, with the sides having met only three times previously in championship action.

Westmeath hold one particularly fond memory of championship football in Salthill. Back in 2006, the Lake County travelled west and produced a memorable victory over Galway in Pearse Stadium - a result that remains one of the county's notable championship successes away from home.

The counties renewed acquaintances more recently in 2023 and again in 2024, with both of those encounters taking place at TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar and ending in Galway victories.

Sunday therefore presents Westmeath with an opportunity to return to a venue where they previously enjoyed championship success and attempt to build another chapter in what has already become a landmark season.

Galway, meanwhile, will welcome the chance to perform in front of a large crowd and know they face a Westmeath side arriving with momentum, confidence and strong travelling support behind them.

Build-up to begins early in Salthill

Supporters travelling early are being encouraged to make the most of the matchday atmosphere at the Salthill-Knocknacarra GAA Clubhouse, located inside the Pearse Stadium grounds.

The clubhouse will host a special pre-match gathering featuring some well-known football figures from both counties.

The bar opens at 12pm, with an added incentive for early arrivals - the first 25 supporters wearing a Galway jersey and the first 25 supporters wearing a Westmeath jersey will receive a complimentary pint.

From 1pm, supporters can enjoy a special pre-match analysis event featuring former stars from both counties. Representing Galway will be former inter-county standouts Seán Armstrong and Joe Bergin, while former Westmeath footballer Damien Healy will offer the Lake County perspective ahead of throw-in. Former St Mary's, Rochfortbridge star Healy was also part of the Westmeath management team last year.

Food and refreshments will be available, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options served.

At 2pm, attention turns fully to Pearse Stadium as the teams take the field for what many expect to be one of the most atmospheric fixtures of the weekend.

Following the conclusion of the game, supporters can remain in the clubhouse where the Tyrone vs Mayo match will be shown live.

Entry to the pre-match event is free and supporters simply need to enter via the Pearse Stadium turnstiles and make their way to the Salthill-Knocknacarra clubhouse.

For Westmeath supporters especially, Sunday has all the ingredients of a memorable championship day. The Lake County are riding the crest of a wave and thousands are making the journey west for opportunity to create another special chapter in an already unforgettable summer.
