4,610 passport applications from Westmeath in 2026
Minister Peter Burke has urged Westmeath residents to check their passports now ahead of summer travel plans, as new figures show that 4,610 passport applications have been received from Westmeath so far in 2026.
The latest figures from the Passport Service also show that 400,000 passports have already been issued nationally this year.
Minister Burke is advising constituents to check their travel documents as early as possible.
“With the summer holiday season now underway, I would encourage everyone to take a few minutes to check that their passport is in date,” he said.
“There is nothing worse than the last-minute realisation that a passport has expired just before a family holiday or important trip abroad.
“The figures show strong demand from Westmeath, with more than 4,600 applications already received this year, while the Passport Service has issued 400,000 passports nationally.
“My advice is simple: check your passport now and, if you need to renew, don’t leave it until the last minute.”
The Passport Service continues to process applications efficiently, with adult online renewals currently taking around 10 working days, child and more complex renewals around 15 working days, and first-time online applications approximately 20 working days. Paper applications can take up to six weeks.
Minister Burke said most applications are now submitted online.
“Around 97% of applications are being made through Passport Online this year, making it the quickest and easiest way for people to apply,” he said.
“Ireland’s passport remains one of the strongest in the world, providing visa-free access to 185 countries and giving Irish citizens exceptional freedom to travel internationally.”
The Passport Service has advised that the most common causes of delays are issues with passport photographs, witnessing requirements and missing documentation, highlighting the importance of ensuring applications are fully completed before submission.
