All Ireland ambitions wilt in Clones cauldron

Westmeath’s All Ireland ambitions wilted in the Clones heat as their remarkable 2026 campaign came to a conclusion after a 1-28 to 2-19 loss at St Tiernach's Park.

Monaghan enjoyed a strong first half breeze, and with two goals, Westmeath managed to go into the break level.

The Farney men’s second half was where they asserted a dominance that earned them their place in the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals.

Monaghan’s four two-pointers in the first 35 minutes, three from goalkeeper Rory Beggan, countered the Leinster champions’ goals from Matthew Whittaker and Brandon Kelly.

The home team pulled away from the flagging Westmeath side in the final quarter, and an expertly taken Jack McCarron goal sealed the six-point victory.
