Tullaghan road in ‘awful state’

Road conditions near the lakeshore in Tullaghan have deteriorated to such an extent that motorists are being forced to use grass verges to pass, councillors have heard. Cllr Andrew Duncan raised the issue at a meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad, describing the stretch of road as being in an “awful state of disrepair”.

“There’s potholes now that are more like the lake than potholes,” he said, warning that the damage is forcing drivers to mount the grass to navigate around them. He said the situation is particularly concerning given the growing popularity of the area, especially among anglers.

“Lough Owel has turned from a relatively quiet lake to a monumental amount of anglers there now,” he said, noting the increase in visitors due to improved brown trout stocks and changing fishing policies.

The area is also used by people seeking a scenic and peaceful lakeside setting, but Cllr Duncan said the poor road conditions are undermining its appeal. “You’re coming down a lovely tarmac driveway… and then you come around the corner, it’s a mess,” he added, highlighting the contrast between the approach and the damaged road.

Responding, district engineer Pat Kavanagh said the council would examine the issue and possible solutions. He noted that, as the location is an amenity area, there may be potential to use Community Involvement Scheme (CIS) funding.
