Representatives from clubs across county quiz ministers on Sports Capital Programme

More than 100 people representing clubs and organisations across Westmeath attended a briefing on the Sports Capital Programme and took the opportunity to put questions to the minister for sport.

Robert Troy, TD, Minister of State at the Dept of Finance, had organised the event and invited Charlie McConalogue, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, to address the gathering at The Downs GAA club on Wednesday evening.

The Sports Capital and Equipment Programme is expected to open for applications in the coming weeks.

Attendees raised questions in relation to their proposed projects and received practical guidance on the application process.

Speaking after the event, Minister Troy said: “I was delighted to host Minister McConalogue in The Downs for this important briefing for sports clubs across Westmeath. The turnout of more than 100 club representatives shows the huge level of interest in the Sports Capital Programme and the ambition that exists within our communities to improve local sporting facilities.

“This was a valuable opportunity for clubs to hear directly from the minister, to better understand the application process and to seek guidance on their proposed projects. I know from speaking to clubs on the night that many are already preparing strong applications for this year’s scheme.”

Minister Troy said the Sports Capital Programme has been a vital source of investment for communities across Westmeath. “In recent rounds, Westmeath clubs and organisations have secured millions of euro in funding through the programme. The 2023 Sports Capital and Equipment Programme supported projects ranging from pitch development and clubhouse improvements to sports equipment purchases and accessibility upgrades.

“Nationally, the programme has provided record levels of funding in recent years, reflecting the government’s commitment to grassroots sport and community participation.”

He said the success of Westmeath clubs in previous rounds demonstrates the quality of projects being developed locally and the dedication of volunteers who work to improve sporting facilities in every corner of the county.”

Minister Troy confirmed that he will be available to assist and engage with all clubs and community groups in advance of the application deadline. “I would encourage every eligible club and organisation to begin preparing now. My office will be happy to engage with clubs, discuss proposed projects and provide whatever assistance we can to help ensure Westmeath continues to secure a strong share of available funding.”

The Sports Capital and Equipment Programme is the government’s primary mechanism for supporting the development of sports facilities and the purchase of non-personal sports equipment throughout the country.

Full details of the 2026 application process are expected to be announced in the coming weeks by the Department of Sport.
